Star Anise is a spice made from the dried fruit of the Illicium verum plant, which is native to China and Vietnam. Its easily recognized by its unique star-shaped pods and strong, sweet, licorice-like aroma and flavor.
Flavor profile: Sweet, warm, and spicy with strong licorice notes (similar to anise, fennel, and licorice root).
Culinary uses:
A key ingredient in Chinese five-spice powder.
Common in Asian cuisine, especially Chinese, Vietnamese (e.g. pho broth), and Indian dishes.
Used in baking and mulled beverages like mulled wine and chai.
Medicinal uses:
Traditionally used to aid digestion, relieve colds, and reduce gas.
Contains shikimic acid, a compound used in the production of Tamiflu (an antiviral).
Caution: True star anise (Illicium verum) is safe in culinary amounts. However, Japanese star anise (Illicium anisatum) is toxic and should not be consumed—its used only for incense.
